Historical mystery doesn’t get more thrilling than in this crime suspense novel set in Elizabethan London, 1599. It’s not only a joy to read in its own right, it's also a 'fictorial'. What’s a fictorial? It’s a novel packed with clever but unobtrusive tips that show you precisely how it was written, to help you write your own novel!
It will appeal equally to avid readers of historical thrillers and students of creative writing who want to enhance their story writing skills, in any genre.
Hippo Yeoman, an apothecary, is accused of four bestial murders. The highest officials of the College of Physicians, the four Censors, have been slaughtered by a serial murderer.
He works to a poetic pattern of revenge. Each murder is apt to the vice of each Censor. A lustful Censor is eaten in the groin by a pig, an arrogant one is hurled from a high place, a mad dissectionist is dissected alive, and a cold-hearted man is baked to death.
To avoid the gallows, Hippo must discover the murderer’s identity, and quickly. All his friends have the means and motive. As time runs out, Hippo finds the killer. It is the one friend he never suspected. The case is proved beyond all doubt. The murderer confesses. Hippo is saved from the gallows.
But has Hippo found the true murderer?
Only in the last scene of this historical mystery is the appalling truth revealed. And even then, the reader may wonder, is it the real truth? Could the killer - unthinkably - still be at large?
Fear Of Evil A Hippo Yeoman mystery The Hippo Yeoman Mysteries Book 1 edition by John Yeoman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Quirks, Freaks, and Finambulators populate John Yeoman's Fear of Evil. This is evident from the first page to the last, every one a delicious feat of language and plot.As another reviewer mentioned, the characters are deeply drawn, with great attention to how they speak. And there is great flair for the historical period that makes me think of Umberto Eco sooner than Agatha Christie.
And as with Eco's most famous mystery, Yeoman matches grave matters during dark times with humor. Simply put, the narrator of Fear of Evil will make you laugh even as his ingenious wit shows you exactly what fear is all about. Innocent Adso he is not.
And the bonus to all of this is the annotated nature of the book, a revelation of the many techniques used to seduce and anuse you. But unlike Yeoman's The Cunning Man, which makes it fun to switch back and forth, Fear of Evil is far too gripping. I highly recommend this fictorial, but suggest saving the schooling for last.

Fear Of Evil A Hippo Yeoman mystery The Hippo Yeoman Mysteries Book 1 edition by John Yeoman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Fear of Evil by author John Yeoman, is a wonderfully written Historical mystery that gives the reader a glance at life in 1599 Lond0n. Author, John Yeoman writes scandalous character’s, interesting dialogue, and vivid descriptions, along with many twists and turns that will keep the reader intrigued throughout the story.
Personally, as a writer, I found the ‘fictorial’ aspects of the novel to be very useful. The ‘fictorial’ tips were placed in position as the story progressed, often reminding the reader of a point made earlier in the novel. This trick helped me reinforce the tip in my mind.
I highly recommend Fear of Evil to all readers of Historical mystery, crime fiction, suspense novels, and writer’s looking to improve their writing. I loved the book in it’s entirety.
I received a PDF copy in exchange for an honest review.

"Fear of Evil" by John Yeoman kept me intrigued from beginning to end. It’s a bit reminiscent of an Agatha Christie mystery in that there are so many possible suspects for the murders in question that it really keeps you guessing. The comparison pretty much ends there, though, as, of course, the time period is centuries different; I also feel that some of Yeoman’s major characters are more deeply drawn.
When the killer is revealed, everyone in the story, not to mention you, the reader, is taken completely off guard. (Well, I was, at least.) But even then, Yeoman keeps you wondering…
The notes at the back of this ‘fictorial’ (an ingeniously helpful genre) are easy to understand and could help any but the most already-accomplished bestselling writer. Linking them to the spots in the story where they are used makes the writing craft skills come to life immediately. I hope John Yeoman continues writing fictorials.
Full disclosure I was given a copy of "Fear of Evil" as a thank-you for participating in a survey the author conducted. (However, I have bought his fictorial anthology "The Cunning Man", and consider it well worth it.)
I bought this book at and wish I knew about it before. It is very valuable to a writer not only because the writer is a master of the language but he is also unpredictable, twists and turns, innuendos and suspense, but for me, the ice on the cake is the fact that he explains the techniques.
The book was a roadmap to improve my writing (if you read just for enjoyment don't look at the notes, but if you are a writer, don't miss any of them because it will help you).
Wonderful book.
